Equipment Preparation & Organization

Yellowstone Backcountry Pack Trips

Traveling through Yellowstone’s backcountry you are essentially stepping back in time. Packing gear onto horses and mules is an art unto its own. Careful gear planning and selection is critical to having a successful trip. We suggest that you pack your gear into a duffel bag and keep the weight limit at or under 30 pounds. Your sleeping bag and fishing gear should be separated from your duffel and are not included as part of the 30 lbs. limit.

LupinePack your fishing gear into a separate duffel so it can be packed on the horses in a manner that makes it readily available for fishing. Sometimes we will actually drop a group of fishermen with a guide before we reach camp and fish our way to camp. Multi-piece rods (3, 4 & 5 piece) are not necessary, but are recommended if you have them. Two-piece rods can be packed on the animals just fine. We recommend that you carry two rods in case one breaks. Pack a lightweight rod (8’-9’, 3-4 wt.) and an all-purpose rod (8.5’-9’, 5-6 wt.).

Most people prefer to bring their own sleeping bags, as this piece of equipment is personal. Sleeping bags can be provided, so please let us know in advance if you need one. Sleeping bags that fit into small stuff sacks work best as opposed to the larger bedroll type, which are heavier and bulkier. You can bring your own sleeping pad as well or we can provide one for you. Tents are also provided although if you’d like to bring your own then please let us know.

In addition to your duffel, fishing gear and sleeping bag/pad there are several items that can be carried on your body or on the horse you ride. All horses are equipped with saddle bags allowing the rider to carry such items as rain gear, camera and film, binoculars, gloves, warm jacket, water bottle, insect repellent, sun block and lunch. Be sure to keep these items separate from your other gear and available at the trailhead so you can place them in the saddlebags or tie them onto the saddle. This will allow you to easily access these items while riding into camp affording you the opportunity to view wildlife, take photos, quench your thirst and stay dry and warm.
