The Madison River

The Upper Madison-  The upper Madison from Quake Lake to Ennis is a very fast and shallow river filled with large glacial boulders.  It is primarily a rainbow and brown trout fishery with fish averaging 12”-18”.  Crystal clear water and spectacular mountain views provide a classic trout stream setting.  The river can be wade fished, however, we recommend drift fishing due to its slippery rocks and swift current.  Greater Yellowstone Flyfishers looks forward to fly fishing with you on the Upper Madison.

The Lower Madison-  Just below Ennis Lake, the lower Madison flows through Beartrap Canyon, a big, brawling whitewater stretch with great fishing. From Beartrap Canyon to Three Forks, the river is slower, shallower, and rich in aquatic life.  Brown and rainbow trout 12”- 26” feed on the abundant aquatic insects and crayfish that populate this stretch.  The lower Madison is an excellent wade or float fishery located only 20 minutes from our Montana fly fishing shop.
