Being the fourth largest state in the US, Montana experiences significant climatic variations across the state. Bozeman is located in Southwest Montana and is home to an ideal four season climate with typical mountain temperatures. With an average of 320 sunny days each year, Bozeman is a great location for outdoor activities, specifically fishing. Summer – The summer season lasts from early June until late August and is characterized by warm weather. The average temperature in June is 74 degrees with July and August averaging in the low 80's. Nights are cool and require a jacket with average low temperature during the summer months in the high 40's. Precipitation in June tends to be higher than the other summer months which are often dry. Fall – Bozeman and surrounding areas have great fall weather. With average high temperatures in the 60's and relatively low precipitation, fall can be a great time for fly fishing. Be sure to bring a sweater as lows are in the 30's during the fall months. Winter – Montana tends to be cold in the winter with Bozeman average highs in the 30's and lows in the teens. December and January are colder than February and March. Average precipitation is around 0.5 inches in December, January and February. March tends to see the most snowfall with an average precipitation of .9 inches. The low humidity and light winds couple to make Bozeman a great location for winter outdoor activities. Despite the cold temps, fly fishing can be a great winter Montana sport if you come prepared. Spring – Come spring temperatures warm and precipitation increases with May and June being the wettest months in Montana. Temperatures in April range between 28 degrees and 54 degrees. Come May the warming is more significant with lows in the high 30's and highs in the mid 60's. Spring can be a great time to float fish Montana's rivers during the spring snow melt.
