Pack Trips

Just south of Bozeman, Montana lies Yellowstone National Park, world-renowned for its premier trout fisheries and world-class dry fly fishing. While many fishing opportunities exist in the area, a multi-day Montana fly fishing horse pack trip into Yellowstone's remote backcountry is the best way to see and fish this vast wilderness.

Yellowstone pack tripsWhile a number of outfitters can lead you into the backcountry on horseback, very few are also experienced fly fishing guides. What distinguishes Greater Yellowstone Flyfishers is that you'll be accompanied into the wilderness with some of the finest Montana fly fishing guides in the industry. We not only take you into this pristine country, but also help you get the most out of your Yellowstone pack trips & backcountry fishing experience. Our experienced team of guides are friendly, professional and patient and have been guiding fly fishers of all levels of experience in the area for over 10 years.

H.A. Moore of Rendezvous Outfitters is our horse outfitter on our Yellowstone pack trips and has over 30 years experience packing folks into Yellowstone's wilderness. He is one of the most respected and experienced outfitters in the Yellowstone area. Our head guide, Chad Olsen, is a leading authority on fishing Yellowstone. Chad has nearly 30 years of backcountry experience and has been teaming up with H.A. on backcountry pack trips in Yellowstone for over 10 years. When you team a seasoned and professional packer and his wranglers with some of the best fly fishing guides in the industry, the end result is an amazing wilderness experience and unparalleled backcountry fishing. We can help you visit the backcountry in style and have the trip of a lifetime!

We place an emphasis on the entire experience: taking in the scenery, viewing wildlife, learning new techniques and catching fish. Having a good time, relaxing and learning are just as important as catching fish. After you are on vacation! Pack trips afford the opportunity to experience Yellowstone on an intimate level and take you away from the pressures of every day life.

Wild Yellowstone cutthroat, rainbows, cutbows, browns, brookies and lake trout all reside within the vast watersheds of the park. The average size of the fish in the backcountry run from 12"-20" with larger fish found in certain areas. Dry fly fishing with large attractors and hopper patterns is the usual approach during the summer months. Sight-fishing with dry flies for wild, robust trout is what makes this fishing so special. The waters you fish during your backcountry adventure are reminiscent of what fishing in the West must have been like 50 years ago!

Montana fly fishing pack tripIn addition to the wild trout population, the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem is home to the largest population of big game animals in the lower 48 and offers an amazing diversity of flora and fauna. Black and grizzly bears, wolves, elk, deer, antelope, moose, bison, bighorn sheep, trumpeter swans, white pelicans and river otters are just some of the species that call the Yellowstone Plateau home. Yellowstone also contains the largest collection of hydrothermal features on the face of the planet and has hundreds of hot springs, waterfalls and cascades. The combination of wildlife, hot springs, waterfalls and pristine wilderness makes for a truly unique and enjoyable backcountry fly fishing experience.

Each trip is customized to meet the desires of each client. We have a minimum 2 nights/3 days stay for overnight Montana fly fishing pack trips. However, we'll stay out for as long as you'd like, several weeks if you desire. We often will ride in from one trailhead and come out at another. We also move camp frequently to see new country and keep things interesting.

The wildlife, solitude, riding horseback through pristine wilderness, camping under the stars, enjoying a hearty meal prepared over an open fire, sipping some fine scotch while sharing the days events and telling stories around the campfire beneath the star speckled sky is what will steal your heart and leave you begging for more.
